XD Air 6™: Portable Media Threat Protection
For over a decade, high-assurance organizations have relied on XD Air to protect classified and otherwise closed environments from the risks of untrusted and unknown files. Built to sanitize files being transported via portable media, XD Air 6 is the next-gen all-in-one solution that inspects, cleans, and safely transfers files across the most sensitive environments in the world.
Why High-Assurance Missions Choose XD Air 6
Tough, Portable, Capable.
XD Air 6 raises the bar on file inspection and sanitization, combining multiple antivirus engines with dual Content Disarm & Reconstruction (CDR) engines. Powered by Panasonic's rugged Toughbook 40, it delivers that protection anywhere — from data centers to forward operating bases and shipboard environments.
Catches What Signature-Based Tools Miss
Traditional antivirus only catches malware it already recognizes. XD Air 6 adds a different layer of defense: its CDR engines evaluate files against known-good references rather than known-bad signatures, catching zero-day exploits and targeted attacks that slip past signature-based scanning alone before they ever reach sensitive classified and closed environments
Built to Meet the Toughest Compliance Bar
XD Air 6 is engineered to meet rigorous U.S. Government requirements for how removable media moves data in and out of classified networks, and to support the field workflows of authorized Data Transfer Agents (DTAs) and mission intelligence operators so security teams can deploy with confidence instead of building a compliance case from scratch.
Key Capabilities
Most security tools only catch what they've already seen before. XD Air 6 is purpose-built to take a different approach, checking each file meets our expectations, so zero-day exploits and targeted attacks get caught before they ever reach a sensitive environment.
A single antivirus engine only knows what one vendor has taught it to look for, and a single content filter can only catch what it's built to catch. XD Air 6 runs multiple antivirus engines simultaneously alongside two independently developed CDR engines, powered by industry-leading providers including Glasswall and PuriFile®.
- Multiple AV engines run in parallel, closing gaps any single engine's signature set might miss.
- Dual CDR engines rebuild files from known-good components, stripping hidden macros, embedded scripts, and obscured content.
- Both CDR engines are individually licensable, so organizations can tailor their assurance needs to their mission and operational needs.
- Runs on CLIP-hardened RHEL 9, evaluated to Common Criteria and STIG compliance standards.
- Engineered against rigorous U.S. Government standards for how removable media moves data to and from classified and closed environments.
- Built to support the workflows of authorized Data Transfer Agents (DTAs) and mission intelligence operators.
Most alternatives take one of two approaches: restrict which devices can connect, or scan for previously identified malware.
- Device-control policies keep unauthorized hardware out but inspect nothing on approved media.
- Antivirus-only tools catch known threats but miss zero-day and targeted attacks entirely.
- Encrypted storage devices protect access to the content itself.
- XD Air 6 combines known-good content filtering with device-agnostic sanitization in a single kiosk, so a file doesn't get a pass just because its device or its content happens to be familiar.
How XD Air 6 Works
XD Air 6 puts a single, repeatable checkpoint between removable media and your most sensitive environments. It’s built from three components: a hardened Host Operating System providing overall security assurance, a Media Component managing transfer to and from removable devices, and a Filter Component running AV and CDR scanning on every file.
Here’s how that plays out in practice: source media is inserted into the kiosk, and the Filter Component scans it to inspect and sanitize hidden, malicious, or unrecognized content. The Media Component then writes only inspected and sanitized, known-good copies to the destination device.
The result is a consistent, mission-ready process that keeps unauthorized or mobile content out of classified and otherwise closed environments, without slowing operators down or requiring extra training.

File Type and System Support
XD Air 6 supports an extensive range of file types, from Microsoft Office and OpenDocument files to images, audio, video, archives, and markup languages, so every file commonly transferred to sensitive environments is inspected, cleaned, and cleared before transfer. For unique mission requirements, user-configurable support extends AV scanning to additional formats.
Supported file types & media include:
- Documents & Productivity: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PDF) and Apache Open Office formats (Presentation, Spreadsheet, Text, Graphics, Formula, Database, Chart)
- Images & Media: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, SVG, TIFF, GeoTIFF, WebP, WAV, MP3, MP4, and other common image, audio, and video formats
- Archives & Markup: Archives, XFDL, XML, iCalendar, HTML, PostScript, EML, and plain text, plus user-configurable support for additional file types (AV only)
- File Systems: Windows and Linux formats including EXT, XFS, APFS,
FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, HFSX, ISO-9960, and Joliet.
- USB & Media Devices: USB mass storage, Sandisk Cruzer, BD/CD/DVD, SD/SDHC cards, floppy disks, and encrypted media (IronKey, Kanguru, Aegis, and other vendors by coordination).
Extend the Power of XD Air Across Your Mission Stack.
XD Air secures the removable media handoff, but a complete data-protection strategy doesn’t stop there. Built on the same foundational principles as XD Air (security, reliability, and minimal user burden), Owl’s Cross Domain Solutions and Data Diodes help programs secure every other path data takes across the boundary. XD Air handles the removable-media checkpoint; when data needs to move between classification levels, Owl’s CDS & diodes handle that transfer.
