VBR Turbine Partners Selects Owl Cyber Defense Solutions to Secure Turbine Data Collection

Key New Deployments Build on Successes in Securing Critical Infrastructure

Ridgefield, CT, October 23, 2018 – Owl Cyber Defense Solutions, LLC (“Owl”), the market leader in data diode network cybersecurity solutions, today announced that VBR Turbine Partners (“VBR”) has selected the OPDS-5D data diode to secure their turbine remote monitoring solutions. The combined solution enables real-time access to performance and maintenance data while providing absolute security for the turbine environment.

As an independent maintenance and spare parts provider to GE natural gas turbines across Europe and the Middle East, VBR services over 60 gas turbine deployments across multiple sites. To support their monitoring operations, VBR sought a cybersecurity solution that could facilitate operational and sensor data transfer from the turbine locations to their centralized monitoring facility without exposing the turbine to cyber threats.

After unsuccessful attempts with other cybersecurity solutions, VBR consulted with technology specialists at 4Secure, Owl’s regional partner in Europe. After a thorough two-day on-site consultation, 4Secure helped VBR to successfully deploy a test OPDS-5D data diode solution in their lab, and it was selected as the solution of choice.

“The Owl solution was selected for a number of technical reasons, including the native OPC support, integration possibilities with the GE historian, and the fact that a single OPDS-5D can be used to collect data from multiple other devices,” said Jan Slagter, Technical Director at VBR. “Owl devices are also certified by major quality standards including EAL and ISO 9001, and used by the U.S. government, which was reassuring for the asset owner that the solution is very secure.”

Owl has a strong history of providing one-way data transfer systems for remote monitoring in critical infrastructure, including fossil and nuclear power generation, power transmission and distribution, water/wastewater, oil and gas, and other industries. In addition to the VBR deployment, Owl has also recently deployed a solution for the Baker Hughes/GE Bently Nevada System1.

“We’re excited at the opportunity to help VBR secure their monitoring systems,” said Dennis Lanahan, Director of International Sales at Owl. “The solution that 4Secure and VBR developed in conjunction with Owl’s technology is really a blueprint for the most secure remote monitoring system in the world.”
