March 4, 2019 – Owl Cyber Defense Solutions, LLC (“Owl”), the market leader in data diode network cybersecurity solutions, is proud to announce the release of the next generation of ReCon, a bidirectional data diode-based cybersecurity solution designed for network segmentation and secure remote command and control. The first-generation ReCon, launched less than a year ago, consisted of two 1U tandem data diodes, with each data diode facilitating one path of the bi-directional solution. Based on market feedback, Owl developed a new, more compact version of the solution, released as a single 1U standard rack-mountable enclosure.
ReCon was designed to combine the same proven security benefits of a hardware-enforced data diode solution with the ability to provide secure round trip, bidirectional communication. This solution enables organizations to maintain secure two-way connections between networks, while reducing their attack surface and providing much higher security assurance than traditional firewalls.
“In the age of digital transformation, many organizations face challenges navigating the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), along with the merging of IT networks and OT (Operational Technology) networks” said Mark Toussaint, Product Manager for Owl. “More networks and digital assets are required to communicate back and forth, requiring bidirectional security for certain communication protocols that cannot be one-way. ReCon provides secure bidirectional data diode communication with absolute network segmentation, making it easier for multiple networks and devices to communicate while maintaining the high security that comes with data diode technology,” he added.
ReCon ensures network security, providing a highly-controlled pathway between two networks (e.g. OT and IT), and enables visibility into plant operations or secure remote command and control of an industrial control system. It augments a secure “air-gapped” architecture, and greatly improves the security of the Industrial Internet of Things.
“The initial launch of ReCon had tremendous success and positive feedback from the marketplace. When our team thought about how customers were using the solution and ways to make value-added improvements, we saw opportunity to reduce the environmental footprint to a 1U form factor to meet the needs of today’s plant operators,” said Sal Morlando, CTO for Owl. “We’re proud to introduce an all-in-one, bidirectional solution that provides higher security than a firewall and is easier to operate and maintain,” he added.
